Young triathlete Junger Triathlet Noor triatleet

Hello, my name is Silver Mikk and I am a Triathlete. Triathlon is a very complex dizipline, which consists of swimming, biking and running. Triathletes are known for their extraordinary level of dedication and will to work for their dreams.Dedication and hard work are more important than talent and physical benefits in becoming a triathlete. This website introduces me as a triathlete. Welcome! Herzlich willkommen! See siin on mind kui triatleeti tutvustav leht. Tere tulemast!

How it all started Wie alles began Kuidas kõik alguse sai

Once I happened to see an interview with Tõnis Mägi, one of the most famous singers of the Singing Revolution in Estlonia. He said: "If you really want something, I mean, if you really really want something - you will achive it." This little quote describes best what I believed and still believe today.

I am not a usual Estonian. I was born in Põlva in 1991 und lived in Tartu for the first couple of years of my life. At the same time my dad was writing his PhD in Germany and my mom was alone with me and my two brothers. I was 4 years old when we finally moved to Germany where I lived for the next 15 years. Right now I am back in Estonia, studying Computer Science at the University of Tartu and training. Since I grew up in Germany and spent most of my young life there, my behaviour and way of thinking seems to be more western European than the stereotypic eastern European.

At first sight many people don't understand why I moved back to Estonia. For me the answer is more than clear - Estonia is my home. This is the only place I truly can call my home and there will never be another place I'd rather live than Estonia. It has been this way all the time and it will stay this way as well. I believe people, who have been living abroad know what I am talking about. Minu jaoks on vastus lihtsamast lihtsam - Eesti on mu kodu.

I started doing sports when I was a young child. My parents put me into gymnastics and I tried some soccer and badminton as well. As a teenager I started jogging with my dad once in a while and at the age of 14 I had even ran a half-marathon and beat the sh*it out of most 21-year olds. Unfortunatelly the organizers of this event did not have a prize for 14 year olds and they refused to let me on the podium with the 21 year olds.
But it was when I joined the local rowing club, that I would really say my sportscareer started. I was jealous of my classmate for having grown a lot of muscles in just one year of rowing, so I decided to give it a try as well (unfortunatelly, it did not work for me). Soon the coaches noticed me and my large amount of endurance and took me into their training group although my technic was really (really!) bad. The first season I mostly spent learning and adapting my technic to disturb the others as less as possible. In the second season however, I reached their level of technic and together we were able to win 2nd place at the German Championships, just 0.27sec behind of the 1st place. My first big achivement, people suddenly knew who I was, my will to win started to grow and I started to train on high-performance level.
Meine sportliche Laufbahn began schon relativ früh.

The next years were always exciting. Enemies got older and quicker and I had to deal with new obstacles. One of the biggest obstacles was probably in the early spring of 2008, when I had surgergy on my right knee. I had to spend 6 weeks with crutches during the most important time of the preparation for the season. There have been a lot of emotionally difficult moments during my sports-life but I will never forget the one moment, when I stood alone and with tears in my eyes in the hangar looking at my skiff and thinking: "You will come back to racing and will climb your way back to the top." The same season I ended up with a silver-medal and a 4th place from the German Championships - it was amazing!

The first time I "met" triathlon was at Challenge Roth event. We met some competing Estonians of which one later invited me to join their triathlon club when I moved to Estonia. Not knowing what was going to happen I raced the TriStar 111 (1km swim, 100km bike and 10km run) even before I had my first swimming lesson. The bike was borrowed from a friend and instead of a tri-suit I was using a rowing suit (they are NOT made for swimming by the way...). It was fun... next year however, I raced with my own bike and a wetsuit. It did quite good from the beginning - 2011 I even won some of the local triathletes using only "raw force", as my later coach loves to say. This was also when Ain-Alar Juhanson started to help me train better. Without him nothing what happened later would be possible Mit dem Triathlon kam ich zum ersten mal bei der Challenge Roth in Kontakt. Triatloniga puutusin esmakorselt kokku Roth-i täispika triatloni võistluse läbi, mis toimub igaaastaselt Saksamaal meie tolleaegse kodukandi lähedal.

This is how everything started... Right now it is the year 2013 and I am preparing for the 70.3 Ironman World Championships in Mont Tremblant next year. We'll see what happens next, but it will be exciting for sure. Hetkel on aasta 2013 ja ma valmistun 70.3 Ironman MM-iks Mont Tremblantis ette. Võib olla põnevil kuidas minuga edasi läheb.

Wish to inspire others to start training Ich will Menschen dazu bewegen sich zu bewegen Soov inspireerida inimesi liikuma

Triathlon is not a cheap dizipline. You literally have to train and race in three different diziplines at once and each of them gives you totally different challenges to deal with. A good race-bike can easily cost several thousand of euros and a quality-wetsuit begins at about 300 euros. Not to mention that you need to buy new running shoes several times a year in order to prevent injuries. Special nutrition and protein drinks help you recover faster and once in a while the body needs a massage to stay fit. Treenida ja võistelda tuleb sisuliselt kolmel alal korraga, millel iga ala jaoks on vaja muretseda eraldi varustus. Korralik võistlusratas maksab mitutuhat eurot, tasemel ujumiskalipsod algavad 300 eurost ja jooksujalatseid tuleb vigastuste vältimiseks mitu korda aastas vahetada. Lisaks on kiireks taastumiseks mahuperioodidel vaja kasutada valgujooke ja erinevaid toidulisandeid. Lihastelegi kulub aeg ajalt üks korralik massaaž ära.

There is no doubt about it - triathlon is really expensive, especially for students. I have invested a lot into my dreams - not only did I invest sweat, countless hours of work and a huge part of my private life, but also financially. I have spent thousands of euros to buy a TT-bike and at least the same amount of money for training camps. Friends and relatives have helped me from time to time to pay for registration fees and travel costs and I am really thankful for their help. Tudengi jaoks on triatlon kahtlemata väga kallis spordiala.

Asking for financial support is not easy at all. Growing up knowing and wanting, that I have to work for eveything I want until I deserved it makes it especially hard for me. I have always tried to give back to those, who have helped me out. I have motivated people to start training, take new challenges and improved their fitness and at the same time they motivated me to work even harder and reach for my dreams. That's how I show my gratitude to others and I love seeing them smiling when they come back to me.
